Origins and Flourishing of Art Deco

With its origins rooted in the late 1910s in France, Art Deco flourished during the 1920s and early 1930s. This movement, with its confident departure from the organic and flowing designs of Art Nouveau, quickly captured the imagination of artists, architects, and creators around the world.

Art Deco’s reach extended far beyond its birthplace. It made its mark across the continents, becoming an international style that echoed the spirit of progress and cultural dynamism. From the United States to Europe and beyond, Art Deco buildings and designs became the embodiment of a new era—one characterized by bold statements and an unapologetic embrace of modern materials.

Art Deco works were symmetrical, geometric, streamlined, often simple, and pleasing to the eye.  This style was in contrast to avant-garde art of the period, which challenged everyday viewers to find meaning and beauty in what were often unapologetically anti-traditional images and forms.

Celebration of Women: Art Deco often celebrated the modern woman, depicting her as confident, fashionable, and independent. While the Art Deco movement wasn't the sole inspiration for Georgia O'Keeffe's art, it existed in the same cultural and artistic context, contributing to the overall creative atmosphere of the time.
