Quote About What Love Is

1 Corinthians 13

The language of love.  What really is it?  Here’s a popular example of how people experience love.   Known widely as the 5 languages of love, they are as follows:

  • Love language #1: Words of affirmation.
  • Love language #2: Acts of service.
  • Love language #3: Gifts.
  • Love language #4: Quality time.
  • Love language #5: Physical touch.

These examples are concrete ways to express and receive love.

But what really is love?  If it’s a quality, how would you describe it?

I found myself looking at some simple timeless truths about what love is lately.  This time from an ancient text – the Bible.

Tucked away in the New Testament is the first book of Corinthians.  In the 13th chapter of that book lie these verses:

LOVE IS PATIENT.

LOVE IS KIND.

LOVE DOES NOT ENVY OR BOAST.

IT IS NOT RUDE OR SELF-SEEKING.

IT IS NOT EASILY ANGERED.

IT KEEPS NO RECORD OF WRONGS.

IT DOES NOT DELIGHT IN EVIL.

IT REJOICES IN TRUTH.

IT ALWAYS PROTECTS, ALWAYS TRUSTS, ALWAYS HOPES, ALWAYS ENDURES.

LOVE NEVER FAILS.

Take the Love Challenge

Here’s a challenge for you.

Replace the word “love” with your name in it.

Seeing how you bear these qualities of love can be an extremely healing and nourishing exercise for your soul and heart.

Try it.  Put yourself to this simple love test.  I do it especially when I forget what love feels like.

It’s those times when you’re feeling angry, upset, betrayed, heartbroken, hurt, disappointed or frightened. When you’re feeling any of these, it’s hard to feel the love.

It’s just 10 simple lines but well worth your time to pause and reflect how far or close you are to these truths.

Usually in a conflict, when I face a stalemate either with myself or another person, I like to turn these statements into personal questions and give my most honest answers to them:

Am I being patient here?

Am I being kind?

Was I easily angered?

Did envious feelings arise?

Was there boasting?

Did I keep a record of wrongs?

Did I rejoice in truth?

What Else Can I Do?

I also use an emotions or feelings wheel to give words to the feelings or emotions I feel inside. (you can get one here

Often, I find love is absent when the qualities of love are missing.
